Herbal Medicine - Herbs

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest methods of treatment. It involves using plants as medicine within a holistic healing context.

Herbal Medicines are made by soaking different parts of plants in a mixture of water and some ethanol to preserve them.

Each herb has unique healing effects i.e. some herbs such as Echinacea stimulate the immune system whereas others such as St Johns Wort are good for the nervous system.

Herbal medicines not only treat symptoms, but help to correct imbalances in the body and stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. Pharmacy medicines are designed to only treat symptoms.

Classical herbal medicine utilises the Hippocratic principles of treating the person, not the disease; evaluating the whole life-style as well as the emotional and circumstantial environment of each patient, not just the physical symptoms.

Herbal medicines are individually prescribed for each patient’s specific needs usually in the form of fluid extracts, infusions or capsules.

Many Herbal medicines are currently being researched ,with science now able to validate traditional uses of many of the herbs.
